
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Blow Molding Lamps to Actually Keep Up
If you’re working with PC preforms, you already know the struggle. You need the heat to be exactly right—not too little, or you’re fighting the material, and not too much, or you’re ruining the plastic. When you’re running a SACMI rotary machine at full tilt, you don’t have a second to waste. That’s why we focused on the lag. We wanted to get rid of that annoying gap between flipping the switch and the preform actually hitting its softening point.
The Balancing Act: Power vs. Lifespan
Here’s the thing about the rhythm of a SACMI machine: it’s fast. To keep up, we tweaked the wattage-to-length ratio. Basically, we packed more punch into the lamp so it recovers its heat the instant a preform passes by. We use high-grade quartz because, frankly, cheap glass would just crack under that kind of thermal stress. But there is a catch. If you crank the wattage too high just to shave a few milliseconds off your cycle, you’re going to be replacing lamps a lot more often. It’s a trade-off. You have to decide where you want to sit on that line.
It’s Not Just About Heat; It’s About Depth
Surface heat is useless. You need the heat to actually sink into the PC material. To make that happen, we used a specific halogen fill and doped quartz to shift the infrared spectrum. It’s the difference between a heat lamp that just warms the skin and one that actually cooks the center. And because nobody wants to spend four hours recalibrating an oven during a shift change, we kept the footprint identical to the OEM specs. The connectors are built for a tight, clean fit—no arcing, no fuss. You just drop them in and get back to work.
A Few Tips for the Shop Floor
Once you put these in, you’ll probably need to tweak your PID controllers. These lamps ramp up much faster than what you’re used to. If you leave your settings where they were, you might end up with scorched preforms. Also, check your cooling blowers. More heat in the tubes means more ambient heat in the housing, so make sure your airflow can handle it. One last piece of advice: order these in wholesale batches. When every lamp in every zone is from the same batch, you don’t get those annoying “cold spots” that leave you with uneven walls in your bottles. It just makes the whole run smoother.
