Getting the Heat Right in SACMI Rotary Blow Molding
SACMI machines move fast. Like, really fast. To keep up with those cycle speeds, your heating lamps can’t be lagging behind. They need to hit the target temperature almost the second they turn on. That’s why we build our infrared bulbs to cut out the start-up lag—because if the heat isn’t consistent, your PET preforms aren’t either.
The trick to a fast start
It all comes down to the balance between the filament mass and the voltage. We use high-density tungsten tucked inside high-purity quartz. By tweaking the diameter of that filament, we’ve managed to kill off the “thermal inertia.” Essentially, the bulb hits its peak temp in milliseconds. Not seconds. Milliseconds. If a lamp takes too long to ramp up, you’ll start seeing uneven wall thickness in your bottles, and that’s a headache nobody wants.
Built for the grind
These are designed as drop-in replacements for Krones-style setups, so they just work. We also made sure the quartz envelope can handle the stress. Think about it: these things heat up and cool down thousands of times every single shift. Most glass would just crack under that kind of pressure. We also obsess over the connectors. We use precision fits because a loose connection is a disaster—it creates hotspots that burn out the ends of the tube. Plus, we keep the footprint tight so they sit perfectly in the SACMI oven’s reflectors, beaming that shortwave IR radiation exactly where it needs to go.
A few things to watch out for
Here’s the thing: pushing that much energy into such a small space creates a lot of heat. It’s powerful, but you’ve got to manage it. Make sure your oven’s ventilation is actually doing its job. If your cooling fans quit or something blocks the airflow, the ambient heat builds up and your bulbs will die way sooner than they should. And one last tip? Keep an eye on your power supply. Voltage spikes are killers. They’ll snap a filament instantly, no matter how high the quality of the bulb is. Keep your power clean, and your quartz will last much longer.
