
Keeping Infrared Heaters Safe in the Bathroom
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a balancing act. You’ve got water vapor and random splashes flying around, which basically turns a standard heater into a giant conductor. Not great. To keep things safe, we focus on three main things: the seal, the insulation, and the grounding. Here is how we actually handle it. Dealing with the damp In a steamy bathroom, moisture doesn’t just sit there—it clings to the heater’s surface. This creates a thin, conductive film that can cause short circuits or “tracking.” To stop that, we use high-grade ceramic insulators and silicone gaskets at the connection points. These materials stay strong even when they’re soaked. We don’t just aim for the basic industry ratings; we go beyond them. The goal is simple: keep the electricity in the filament and far away from the outer shell. Closing the gaps The real danger zone is where the wire meets the lamp. That’s where things usually fail. A cheap rubber boot just won’t cut it. Instead, we use epoxy potting or compression glands to lock out the humidity. It stops the “wicking” effect. You know, when water basically crawls along the wire insulation and sneaks right into the electrical housing? Yeah, we don’t want that. The tricky part: Heat vs. Seals Now, here’s the catch. Tight seals are amazing for waterproofing, but infrared lamps expand and contract like crazy when they heat up and cool down. If you seal the glass-to-metal joint too tightly, the quartz tube will just snap under the pressure. It’s a nightmare. So, we use flexible, high-temp silicone seals. They move with the lamp, keeping the water out without cracking the glass. Just a heads-up: make sure your enclosure has enough venting. If you trap all that heat inside, you’ll end up with condensation inside the housing, which makes all those waterproof seals pointless. And of course, we bond the outer chassis to the earth ground. It’s the ultimate safety net. If a seal ever does fail, the GFCI trips instantly. Simple. Safe. Done.
