
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam constantly floating around and the occasional direct splash of water. In that kind of environment, standard heating elements just won’t cut it. If you don’t have total electrical isolation, you’re basically asking for a short circuit.
How to actually keep the electricity out
The real secret is all in the housing and how the terminals are sealed. Water is a conductor, and in a steamy shower, it finds every little gap it can. That’s why we stick with high-grade quartz glass for the emitter. We then seal the ends with silicone gaskets or moisture-resistant epoxy. It creates a tight barrier so water can’t creep into the filament chamber. You’ll want to look for an IP rating—usually IP44 or higher. It sounds technical, but it basically just means that while the lamp is blasting heat, the electrical guts stay bone-dry. We also use reinforced insulation that doesn’t break down or melt, even when things hit 200°C.
The danger zone: Wiring and Connections
Most failures don’t happen in the middle of the lamp; they happen at the connection point. If you use standard open terminals, the humidity will eat away at the metal. You’ll get oxidation, and eventually, a nasty arc-over. We use sealed connectors to stop “creepage”—that’s when moisture creates a tiny, invisible bridge for electricity to travel where it shouldn’t. And please, don’t skip the grounding. A dedicated earth wire bonded to the metal chassis is a lifesaver. If there is ever a leak, the breaker trips immediately. It’s much better than the outer casing becoming live.
The trade-off you should know about
Here’s the thing: waterproofing usually requires a thicker enclosure or a protective lens. It’s great for safety, but it does block some of that infrared heat. You’ll notice a slight drop in efficiency. To fix that, you might need to bump up the wattage a bit to get the same warmth. Just make sure your circuit can handle the extra load so you don’t blow a fuse every time you want a warm bathroom.
