When you’re picking out an infrared lamp for your ceiling, the temptation is to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: bigger isn’t always better. It’s really about how much air is in the room. If you go too big, you’re just burning money and risking a meltdown in your ceiling. Go too small? You’ll be shivering in the cold until the room is already thick with steam. No one wants that.
Picking the right power for your space
It mostly comes down to how much floor space you’re dealing with. For those tiny powder rooms—you know, the ones under 4m²—a 400W to 600W short-wave lamp is usually plenty. It hits you with that immediate warmth the second you flip the switch. No waiting around. If your bathroom is a bit bigger (between 4m² and 8m²), you’ll want something in the 800W to 1200W range. But a pro tip here: instead of one massive, scorching lamp, try splitting the load between two smaller ones. It spreads the heat around much better, so you don’t have one “hot spot” and one freezing corner. For the big master baths over 10m², you’re looking at 1500W or more. You might even want to set up different heating zones.
The trade-offs you should know about
Higher wattage feels great because the heat transfer is fast. It’s instant. But there’s a catch. More power means more current. You’ve got to make sure your wiring and circuit breakers can actually handle the load, or you’re asking for trouble.
