
Keeping Your Patio Warm Without the Headache
If you’re running a nightclub patio, you know the struggle. One minute it’s a vibe, the next, your guests are shivering and heading back inside. To fix this, we lean on short-wave infrared heaters. The magic here is that they don’t bother trying to heat the air—which is pointless because the wind just carries it away. Instead, they heat people and objects directly. It’s like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. Instant warmth.
The Gear (and why it won’t blow up)
When you’re putting electronics outdoors, water is the enemy. We only use gear with an IP65 rating or better. Basically, that means rain or heavy humidity won’t fry your circuits. Inside the units, we usually go with quartz tubes or carbon fiber. These are tough. They can go from freezing to scorching in seconds without cracking under the pressure. But here is the part where people usually mess up:the power. A few 2kW lamps pull a massive amount of juice. If you throw ten of these on one line, you’re hitting 20kW. If your electrical panel isn’t built for that, you’re going to be tripping breakers right when the party is peaking. Not a great look.
Making it “Smart”
Everyone wants a “one-click” system, but you can’t just plug a heavy-duty heater into a flimsy smart switch. Do that, and you’ll probably melt the chip in a matter of minutes. Instead, we use a middleman: a heavy-duty contactor. The smart controller (whether it’s Zigbee, Wi-Fi, or a building system) just sends a tiny signal to the contactor, and the contactor does the heavy lifting of switching the actual power. It’s safer, and it lasts way longer. We also toss in some temperature sensors. We set them to trigger the moment it hits 10°C. The lamps kick in, and within seconds, the patio feels cozy again.
The “Hot Spot” Problem
Infrared heat is intense. If you mount these too low, the person sitting directly under the lamp will be sweating while the person three feet away is still freezing. It’s all about the angle. You have to get the mounting height just right based on how the reflector throws the heat. Spend the time to get the spacing right now, or you’ll spend your whole night moving chairs around for grumpy guests.
