
Getting Your KHS Bottles Right: The Truth About Heat
Ever pull a bottle off the line and see that weird, cloudy pearlescence? Or maybe the walls are thick in one spot and paper-thin in another. It’s frustrating. Usually, it comes down to one thing: your heat is all over the place. We see it all the time. An old lamp burns out, or someone throws in a cheap replacement, and suddenly you’ve got “hot spots.” Instead of a smooth warm-up, the preform gets scorched. To stop that, you need a lamp that actually holds a steady temperature from one end of the tube to the other. The nitty-gritty on the heat We don’t just make “generic” lamps. We build our quartz halogen tubes to fit the exact power needs of a KHS setup. It’s all in the details—how the tungsten filament is wound and how thick the quartz is. If the wattage is too high for the length of the tube, you’re just asking for localized overheating. We balance the output so you get the heat you need without warping the plastic. Swapping them out You don’t want to spend your weekend rewiring a machine. That’s why these use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just slide right into your existing sockets. We use high-purity fused quartz, too. Why? Because these things go through a brutal cycle of heating and cooling. Cheap glass warps. Ours doesn’t. Some of our tubes even have special coatings. Instead of wasting energy heating up the metal frame of your machine, the heat goes exactly where it belongs: into the PET. A few things to keep in mind Here’s the trade-off. If you go with higher wattage lamps, you’ll hit your operating temperature faster. That’s great for cutting down warm-up time. But, there’s a catch. Those high-density lamps put more stress on your power supply and make the oven run hotter. If your cooling blowers are clogged with dust or just plain broken, that trapped heat will kill your lamps a lot faster. Keep those blowers clean. At the end of the day, we just want these to work better than the OEM versions. You get the heat in the preform, not floating around in the air.
