
Getting the Wattage Right for Your Bathroom Heater
Ever stepped into a bathroom that felt like a sauna in one corner and an ice box in the other? Or maybe you’ve seen someone put a massive industrial heater in a tiny powder room, only for the thing to burn out in a few months. It happens all the time. People just grab the most powerful unit they can find, thinking “more is better.” But in reality, if the heat doesn’t match the size of the room, you’re either wasting money on electricity or just making the room uncomfortable.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room or a small guest bath (we’re talking under 4 square meters), you don’t need a beast of a machine. A250W to 400W lampdoes the trick. Since there isn’t much air to heat up, these smaller units give you that cozy, steady warmth without making the room feel stifling. For those mid-sized bathrooms (around 5-10 square meters), you’ll want to bump it up to600W or 800W. Here’s the thing: tiles are cold, and ventilation fans are constantly sucking warm air out. To fight that, try to position the lamp right where you actually stand. It’s much better to have the heat hit you directly than to try and warm up the entire room. Then you have the big master baths—anything over 10 square meters. You could go with a 1000W+ unit, but I’ve found a better way. Trytwo 500W lampsinstead of one giant one. It spreads the heat around much more naturally. No more “hot zones” or shivering while you walk from the shower to the vanity.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Higher wattage gets you warm faster. That’s the perk. But the downside is the pull on your electrical system. If you start hanging three or four 1000W lamps on one circuit, you’re probably going to trip your breaker. Just double-check your wiring before you start drilling holes in the ceiling. Also, remember that these short-wave infrared lamps work differently than a space heater. They heat you, not the air. That’s why picking the right wattage is so important. If the lamp is too weak, the heat simply won’t reach you. But if it’s way too powerful for a small space, the housing can get hot enough to actually burn someone. Just match the power to the footprint of the room. Keep it simple.
